Madhav Tiwari, a 21‑year‑old fast bowling all‑rounder from Mauganj, Madhya Pradesh, announced himself in IPL 2026 with a sensational debut performance for Delhi Capitals against Punjab Kings. In his first appearance of the season, he picked up his maiden IPL wickets and then finished the match with a blistering, unbeaten 18 off 8 balls to help Delhi over the line.
His 2 for 40 with the ball and calm, powerful hitting with the bat earned him the Player of the Match award and immediate praise from fans and pundits. Bought by Delhi Capitals for ₹40 Lakh ahead of IPL 2025, Tiwari’s show in Dharamsala underlined his promise as a genuine fast‑bowling all‑rounder.
Early life and domestic rise
Madhav Tiwari hails from Mauganj in Madhya Pradesh and developed his cricket through local nets and state age group systems. He represented Madhya Pradesh at the U‑19 and U‑23 levels, where he showed raw pace and an attacking batting approach.
Tiwari also played in the Madhya Pradesh T20 League for Bhopal Leopards, where his performances with both ball and bat brought him to the notice of IPL scouts. Tiwari’s rise from domestic cricket to a contract with the Delhi Capitals is a perfect illustration of how regular performances in domestic cricket can pave the way for professional play.
Match performance against the Punjab Kings
Bowling: At Dharamshala, Tiwari picked up his first IPL wickets, getting the better of Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly, recording figures of 2 for 40. With his speed and the knack of delivering lengths, he made the top-order batsmen struggle hard in their attempt to chase down the target.
Batting: Joining in the last part of the innings, Tiwari bludgeoned an unbeaten knock of 18 off just eight balls, with vital hits for four runs and a six.
Impact: That double contribution with ball and bat made him the match-winner and showed why teams value multidimensional players who can influence both innings.
Why the performance matters
Tiwari’s showing matters for several reasons. First, lower-order finishers who can also bowl are rare, and they change how a captain builds the team balance. Second, breaking partnerships with the ball and then closing out a chase displays strong temperament for a young player. Third, a breakout IPL game often accelerates a player’s development path by bringing better coaching, more match exposure, and wider recognition. For Delhi Capitals, Tiwari provides a flexible option who can bowl overs when needed and add oomph to the lower middle order.
Background contract and expectations
Delhi Capitals picked Tiwari in the IPL auction ahead of the 2025 season for ₹40 Lakh. That investment reflected Delhi’s strategy of backing young domestic talent with potential to contribute across departments.
After his Player of the Match performance in IPL 2026, expectations have risen. The focus of the team management and supporters will be on the consistency, improvement in the variations of the ball for the death over, and development of the finishing skills in the match.
Quote and mindset
Tiwari is known for playing with total commitment in both forms and being fully prepared to face the situations during the game. This attitude plays an important role in his success and explains his reliability at the end of the match.
Areas for development
Despite the great performance demonstrated by Tiwari in the Dharamsala game, his further success will be determined by the need for consistency and the improvement of various variations of the ball for the death over.
With the bat, he is set to gain experience on how best to approach various chasing games and choose which shots to use and when. Fitness conditioning to ensure he maintains his pace through long tournaments will also be vital in his future growth.
What’s next for Madhav Tiwari
The first thing that comes to mind after his Player of the Match performance is that there will now be high expectations for him, but also plenty of chances. The Delhi Capitals will definitely give him more play time, provided he continues to display such form.
Tiwari should continue building on his current success by ensuring that he delivers regularly winning performances in the matches. He should also fine-tune those aspects in his game that make the difference between an ordinary player and a top-notch performer
