The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction was full of surprises, with several players bagging huge money deals. All ten franchises together spent a sum of INR 639.15 crore to acquire 182 players. Indian cricketers Rishabh Pant (INR 27 crore) and Shreyas Iyer (INR 26.75 crore) made the event a blockbuster by becoming the most expensive players in IPL history by surpassing Australian pace bowler Mitchell Starc’s previous year auction’s record of INR 24.75 crore.
At the same time, the two-day bidding event sparked controversy with shocking exclusions as none of the Bangladeshi cricketers were picked by the franchises for the forthcoming 18th season.
Out of 62 overseas players, 12 of them from Bangladesh registered for the mega auction having huge expectations of acquiring an IPL contract.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was the only cricketer from Bangladesh to participate in IPL 2024. Also, he was the leading wicket-taker for his team by picking up 14 wickets in 9 innings having an average of 22 and an economy of 9.26. Despite his valuable performance, the franchise released him and opted to retain New Zealand’s all-rounder Rachin Ravindra via a Right to Match (RTM) card rather than preferring the 29-year-old Bangladeshi bowler.
3 Possible Reasons Why Bangladeshi Cricketers Went UNSOLD in IPL 2025 Mega Auction
Although the franchises haven’t provided any specific explanations for ignoring players from Bangladesh, there might be three possible reasons for overlooking their selection during the auction:
1. Subpar Performance in T20 Cricket:
Bangladeshi cricketers haven’t been exhibiting a considerable performance in T20 cricket recently. Especially, the lack of intent from batters in terms of scoring runs instantly and maintaining consistency prompted the franchises to bid on other quality overseas players. Most importantly, the Bangladesh cricketers have struggled to find their form in franchise T20 leagues. This is one of the main reasons why none of the franchises attempted to bid on any of the 12 players from Bangladesh.
2. Departing in the middle of the season:
The second reason for ignoring Bangladesh players during the auction is leaving the tournament in the middle. Most often, the players have struggled to obtain NOC (No Objection Certificate) from BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board) to participate in franchise leagues.
Even if players arrive in India to take part in IPL, the BCB organizes the series that clashes with the schedule of the rich-cash league. As a result, Bangladeshi cricketers have to depart leaving IPL in the middle, which could pose a huge loss for franchises after investing plenty of funds on a player during the auction.
3. Socio-Political Issues in Bangladesh:
The controversy fueled up on social media citing the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, as the socio-political tensions contributing to be one of the main reasons for omitting Bangladeshi cricketers during the mega auction.
Earlier, Pakistani players were strictly prevented from participating in IPL due to security issues and ignoring Bangladeshis points out the interference of sports and politics that have affected the player’s selection.
A few Indian cricket fans have voiced their frustrations saying that if players from Pakistan are prohibited from involving in IPL due to terrorism, then Bangladesh should face a similar penalty for attacking Hindus.
