Recently, the ICC (International Cricket Council) conducted a meeting on 29th November 2024, and it lasted for about 15 minutes. However, no decision was confirmed and there is still uncertainty about the venues for the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
Moreover, time is running out, with about 3 months for the Champions Trophy 2025 to begin in February. But still, the International Cricket Council has not come to a conclusion about which countries will host the upcoming year’s men’s ICC event.
No Travel to Pakistan: India is firm in their Stance
Upon repeated discussions, the BCCI (Board of Council for Cricket in India) has confirmed again and again that they cannot travel to Pakistan. Also, they have voiced their reason that the Indian Government does not approve this due to safety concerns.
Hosting Country is not ready to accept the Hybrid Model
Pakistan is the official hosting nation for ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and the PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi has been reiterating their stance. From the beginning, he stated that the nation would not entertain the idea of a hybrid model where India would be playing their matches outside Pakistan.
Later on, he softened on his decision to accept the hybrid model, the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) chairman stated that they are ready to do what is best for cricket. At the same time, he mentioned that whatever best is to be done must be based on equality.
However, it was best that they went inclined with the Hybrid model, or else the entire tournament would have been moved out of Pakistan.
3 Expected Venues to Host India Matches in ICC Champions Trophy 2025
Here are the 3 possible venues that the ICC (International Cricket Council) might select for hosting the matches of India, instead of playing in Pakistan.
UAE (United Arab Emirates)
The first and foremost option to host India’s matches is the UAE (United Arab Emirates). Recently the Ambassador of the UAE has stated their interest and willingness to host the matches in Fusion formula. By this, both the countries India and Pakistan will play their matches in Dubai instead of their rival nations.
However, UAE offers its best stadium with world-class facilities, where it has hosted other events like Asia Cup 2018 and ICC T20 World Cup 2021. Moreover, the ICC headquarters location is in Dubai, so if the Hybrid model or Fusion Formula is confirmed, then we might witness the match to be held there.
Sri Lanka
To co-host the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Sri Lanka is the next best option after the UAE. Already Sri Lanka has experienced the hybrid model as they earlier co-hosted the Asia Cup 2023 along with Pakistan.
At that time, Despite Pakistan being the official host of the tournament, all the matches of India including the final were played on Sri Lanka soil. And, India won the tournament by winning over Sri Lanka in the final.
South Africa
Being a non-Asian nation, South Africa is expected to be a favorable option to host the entire tournament of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Also, discussions are going on regarding this, whether the tournament should be shifted from Pakistan to South Africa.
However, South Africa hosting the tournament is not recommended because of the transportation complexities of both teams. India and Pakistan will have to fly to South Africa and back to their nation.
Whereas, ICC on the other hand is planning to implement the fusion formula where India will not play in Pakistan and Pakistan will not play in India. Rather, these 2 nations will play all their matches in Dubai, UAE (which was supposed to be played on the soil of their rival nations).
Harbhajan Singh Asks Pakistan to Keep It Aside!
Retired Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh urged the PCB to cooperate with the hybrid model. Also, he insisted they keep their ego quiet for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
The Champions Trophy tournament will have 8 teams competing against each other and the matches are said to be held in different parts of Pakistan. Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Karachi are the locations that will host the matches beginning from 19th February 2025 to 9th March 2025.
Despite all the arrangements and deep discussions, still, the fate of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 seems to be hanging in uncertainty. Especially, after the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) once again made it clear that they will not send team India to Pakistan because of many security reasons. As a result, we will have to wait for the ICC’s final decision on implementing either the Hybrid Model or Fusion Formula from the 2025 season onwards for the Champions Trophy 2025.
