‘Mix of Both’: Karun Nair Explains IPL and Ranji Trophy as Yardsticks for India Test Selection

Home » ‘Mix of Both’: Karun Nair Explains IPL and Ranji Trophy as Yardsticks for India Test Selection

The debate over what should be the primary criterion for India Test selection, stellar performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) or consistent runs in the Ranji Trophy, has intensified in recent years. With the rise of T20 cricket and the IPL’s global prominence, questions have emerged about whether a player’s IPL exploits should outweigh their first-class records.

Karun Nair, who recently made a remarkable comeback to the Indian Test squad after nearly a decade, has openly addressed this issue, providing valuable insights into the selection process and what truly matters for earning a spot in India’s Test team.

Karun Nair’s Journey: A Tale of Grit and Redemption

Karun Nair’s return to the Indian Test side is a story of perseverance and determination. After being dropped from the national team despite scoring a historic triple century, Nair faced years of struggle, self-doubt, and hard work in domestic cricket. His move to Vidarbha proved to be a turning point, where he amassed over 1550 runs across formats in the 2024/25 season, including 863 runs in the Ranji Trophy at an impressive average of 53.94. These performances forced selectors to reconsider his case, especially after he led Vidarbha to the Ranji Trophy final and delivered consistently under pressure.

What Did Karun Nair Say About Test Selection Criteria?

Karun Nair has been vocal about the ongoing debate between IPL and Ranji Trophy performances as the yardstick for India Test selection. In a candid conversation on R Ashwin’s YouTube channel, Nair emphasized that while IPL performances matter, they should not be the sole criterion for Test selection. He argued for a balanced approach, stating:

“I think it should be a mix of both, it should mainly be first-class cricket, and then a bit of IPL too. If these players can replicate their form from first-class cricket at the IPL level, it should count. It shouldn’t be that they only play IPL and not first-class cricket, and get a chance in the Indian team. I think it should be a mix of both, but mainly focusing on first-class cricket, where you play on different conditions and surfaces.”

Nair further explained that first-class cricket, like the Ranji Trophy, tests a player’s technique, temperament, and adaptability across various pitches and conditions. He believes that enduring the grind of domestic cricket is essential for building the foundation required for Test cricket.

Why Ranji Trophy Still Matters Most for Test Selection

1. Testing Skills in Varied Conditions

The Ranji Trophy exposes players to a range of conditions—turning tracks, seaming wickets, and challenging weather. This variety is crucial for preparing batters and bowlers for the demands of Test cricket, which often requires patience, technique, and mental toughness.

2. Sustained Performance Over a Season

Unlike the IPL, which is a short, high-intensity tournament, the Ranji Trophy stretches over several months. Players must maintain form and fitness over a long period, proving their consistency and resilience—qualities indispensable for Test cricket.

3. Opportunity for Redemption and Growth

Nair’s journey is a testament to the importance of domestic cricket. After being sidelined despite his triple century, he had to return to the grind, score heavily for Vidarbha, and prove his worth all over again. This process not only honed his skills but also built his character and mental strength.

IPL’s Role: A Platform, Not the Sole Yardstick

Karun Nair acknowledged that the IPL provides a platform to compete against the world’s best and adapt to high-pressure situations. However, he cautioned against using IPL performances as the only benchmark for Test selection:

“IPL performances surely count. There are so many players coming through every year that you have to keep redefining your game to suit how that team plays. If you can do well in the IPL, you can do well anywhere in the world, I would think. But it should not be that they don’t play first-class cricket and only play in the IPL and make it to the Test side.”

Conclusion

Karun Nair has a clear view, and it comes out of experience: IPL performances are good, but they must not be the ultimate parameter to be selected to play in the Indian team Test games, with regular good runs in the Ranji Trophy and other first-level games. This will provide the skills and temperament, plus experience required in players, so that they are ready to play in the top league in cricket.
