Royal Challengers Bengaluru entered the IPL 2026 playoffs in style as Virat Kohli and Venkatesh Iyer produced a masterclass with the bat to power RCB to a 23‑run win over Punjab Kings in Dharamshala. The defending champions lifted themselves to 18 points from 13 matches and now sit firmly at the top of the points table. With this performance, RCB have sent a strong message that they are serious about defending their title, while Punjab Kings have slid into a deep crisis with their sixth consecutive loss of the season.

RCB post monster 222 for 4

Chasing a big total, RCB set the tone from the very first over by batting first at the HPCA Stadium. In Dharamshala, the pitch provided true bounce and was good for batting, thus making the playing conditions ideal for RCB’s attacking batting lineup. The openers Rajat Patidar and Virat Kohli helped the side get off to a good start, but after Patidar got out for 21 runs, Kohli upped the ante and dominated the proceedings.

Virat Kohli’s 58 runs in 37 balls were a combination of class and aggression.

He hit 4 fours and 3 sixes, anchoring the innings while keeping the scoring rate over 9. His 76‑run stand with Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a quickfire 45, laid the foundation for a big total. Padikkal found scoring lanes through the offside and used the pitch’s pace to clear the infield, giving RCB early momentum.

After Kohli’s departure, Venkatesh Iyer walked in at number four to replace the injured Rajat Patidar and turned the game into a one‑sided show. His unbeaten 73 off just 40 balls included 8 boundaries and 4 big sixes, and he reached his maiden fifty for RCB in only 29 deliveries. Venkatesh looked utterly in control, rotating strike early and then going after the bowlers in the final overs. He ended his knock with a stylish six and a viral celebration in tribute to actor Thalapathy Vijay, which lit up social media.

Tim David provided the finishing touches at the death, smashing 28 runs off only 12 balls. His cameos in the last two overs pushed the total from a strong 200‑plus score to a match‑winning 222 for 4. With the free‑flowing middle order and smart power‑play batting, RCB sent a clear message that they are peaking at the right time in IPL 2026.

PBKS top order collapses early

Chasing 223 on a fast, bouncy track, the Punjab Kings needed a strong start from their openers. But RCB’s bowlers had other plans. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, leading the attack in the powerplay, delivered a clinical spell that left PBKS reeling at 19 for 3. The veteran seamer sent back Priyansh Arya for a duck and removed Prabhsimran Singh for just 2, killing any early momentum.

Rasikh Salam Dar then added to PBKS’s misery by clean bowling skipper Shreyas Iyer for only 1. At one point, three wickets were down with just 19 runs on the board, and the pressure on Punjab’s batting order started mounting. The asking rate soon climbed above 11 runs per over, and the visitors lost the match flow within the first six overs.

The middle order tried to rebuild, but every small stand was quickly broken by accurate bowling and tight fielding. RCB targeted the outside edge with the new ball and used the extra bounce to keep the batsmen under pressure. By the time the power play ended, PBKS had already slipped behind the required rate, and the task became almost impossible.

Shashank Singh and Marcus Stoinis gave Punjab Kings a brief ray of hope with a 67‑run stand that kept the required run rate in single digits for a while. Shashank’s 56 off 27 balls, laced with 5 fours and 4 sixes, showed his clean striking against both pace and spin, while Stoinis added a busy 37 using his power along the leg side.

However, once Shashank got out, trying to accelerate, the pressure shifted back to the middle and lower order, who could not match his authority. RCB’s disciplined bowling, led by Josh Hazlewood and Rasikh Salam Dar (3/36), kept picking up wickets at key moments, restricting Punjab Kings to 199 for 8 and handing RCB a 23‑run win. That victory made Royal Challengers Bengaluru the first team to qualify for the IPL 2026 playoffs, while Punjab’s sixth straight loss has left their own chances in serious doubt
