India’s Winnings in the Champions Trophy So Far All You Need to Know!

Home » India’s Winnings in the Champions Trophy So Far All You Need to Know!

India has participated in all editions of the ICC Champions Trophy since 1998 and won the championship title twice — as a solo winner in 2013 under MS Dhoni’s captaincy, and as joint winners along with Sri Lanka in 2002 after the final match was washed out due to severe rains.

Also, India was the runner-up in two seasons (in 2000 and 2017) losing to New Zealand and Pakistan in the finals.

However, Australia has been the most successful team in the Champions Trophy, claiming back-to-back titles by triumphing over West Indies and New Zealand in the finals of the 2006 and 2009 seasons each.

Back in 1998, the inaugural season started as the Mini ODI World Cup, known as the ICC’s knockout tournament played every four years once. The first two seasons were held in Bangladesh and Kenya with the main intention of generating funds for non-test playing nations. Eventually, the tournament gained immense commercial success and started to take place in full-member cricket nations such as Sri Lanka, England, South Africa, India, and Pakistan.

The forthcoming 9th season of the Champions Trophy 2025 will be hosted by Pakistan and marks its comeback after eight years. Based on the rankings in the points table of ODI World Cup 2023, these eight teams qualified for the tournament:

  • Semi-Finalists:
    • India (1st)
    • South Africa (2nd)
    • Australia (3rd)
    • New Zealand (4th)
  • 5th: Pakistan (Host Nation)
  • 6th: Afghanistan
  • 7th: England
  • 8th: Bangladesh

Conclusion:

The Champions Trophy 2025 is set to take place in a hybrid model as India wouldn’t be traveling to their rival nation citing security issues. Recently, the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) selected UAE as the neutral venue where India could play all its matches. This is because the choice for the tournament’s neutral venue will be made by the hosting nation. However, the exact schedule will be soon revealed by the ICC (International Cricket Council) in the upcoming days.
