The official confirmation of former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan’s appointment as the new mentor of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) franchise could improve the bowling attack for the upcoming IPL (Indian Premier League) season.
Interestingly, the LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka acted smartly and appointed the ex-Indian player to fill the vacancy left by Gautam Gambhir after becoming the head coach of Team India. The franchise made its official announcement on social media on 28th August 2024.
Following a two-year break, the 45-year-old Zaheer Khan is set to return to IPL after serving multiple roles for his former team Mumbai Indians (MI) from 2018 to 2022. He was the Director of Cricket and Head of Global Development at Mumbai Indians, where he provided valuable guidance to develop the team’s strategies and motivate young talents to transform them into future core players.
Sanjiv Goenka shared his opinions in a recent press conference stating that Zaheer will take care of players’ development.
Earlier, LSG qualified for the IPL playoffs for two consecutive seasons in 2022 and 2023 under Gambhir’s mentorship and a strong bond with the head coach Andy Flower.
Zaheer Khan is hailed as one such cricketing brain, whose guidance can prove to be a game-changing move for the LSG after he steps into his role. It is expected that his presence can bolster the pace bowling attack for the next season. So, it’s time that we delve deeper to explore the main reasons why Zaheer Khan’s selection as LSG mentor could prove to be the turning point for the team.
Huge Improvements for LSG’s Strategy
Zaheer Khan maintains a calm and composed attitude under pressure both on the field as well as off-field. He has an in-depth understanding of the sport, which is exactly the team’s requirement to achieve success. It is understood that his presence can add fuel to the team’s performance in terms of batting, bowling, and fielding. His valuable insights can help LSG transform into one of the most dominant teams in IPL.
Bring Out Mayank Yadav’s Best Potential
The 22-year-old Mayank Yadav has emerged as one of the young and dynamic fast bowlers in the previous IPL season. But, he has been facing frequent injuries on his body.
However, Zaheer and Mayank possess certain similarities between them. In reality, Zaheer too faced so many injuries in the early stages of his career. But, he worked hard to overcome the obstacles and went on to become one of the successful Indian pace bowlers.
Based on his personal experience, Zaheer can guide Mayank Yadav, not only in terms of recovering from his injury but also in maintaining his body fit as well as developing bowling skills in consistent lines and lengths.
Meanwhile, there is gossip that the selectors might prefer Mayank Yadav for the upcoming test tours for Team India. If such happens, then Zaheer Khan is the perfect choice who can suggest corrections about Mayank’s body posture and train him for the longest format of cricket.
Current Set of Pacers to Benefit After Zaheer’s Arrival as LSG Mentor
It is guaranteed that the LSG pacers will gain maximum advantage once Zaheer Khan arrives as LSG mentor. Currently, the squad consists of a few best pacers in the tournament, whose skills can be improved under Zaheer’s guidance. Along with Mayank Yadav, other young quality pacers such as Mohsin Khan and Yash Thakur seem to be the promising option for the franchise.
Also, the mega auction might bring huge changes to the LSG squad and invite top-quality fast bowlers into the squad.
One of the major drawbacks LSG top-tier bowlers have faced over these years is a need for more consistency in delivering balls with proper line and length. But, Zaheer is the perfect choice to rectify these issues.
Successful Track Record in Developing Player’s Talent
Zaheer Khan’s previous stint with Mumbai Indians proves his track record of bringing out the best talents of the young players. This would be a crucial strategy for the ex-Indian fast bowler, who is aiming to develop a winning mentality in the LSG camp in the upcoming season.
Final Thoughts
It is confirmed that Zaheer Khan will join the LSG head coach Justin Langer, who was appointed as a replacement for Andy Flower ahead of the commencement of the previous IPL season. The collaboration of Zaheer with Langer along with the assistant coaches Adam Voges and Lance Klusener provides hope to the LSG franchise owner and fans that the team is ready to lift its maiden IPL trophy. Ultimately, the LSG is set to witness a new era in the rich cash league under Zaheer Khan’s mentorship from the next season onwards
