How Much Will an India vs Pakistan No-Show Cost the T20 World Cup?

Generally, in an ICC event, the India-Pakistan fixture tends to generate revenue of USD 250 million, which is equivalent to INR 2200 crore. According to estimates gathered, the absence of the revenue-generating fixture from the upcoming T20 World Cup is certain to cause heavy losses for all stakeholders.

The archrivals were placed in the tournament as planned to pull off those playing multi-team events because of difficult relations between the two nations. However, the International Cricket Council positions them in the same group in every world contest.

On Sunday, 01 February 2026, the Pakistan government officially made their announcement about boycotting the big clash against India in Colombo that was scheduled for 15 February 2026.

Pakistan’s Risk of Constant Refusal

In case Pakistan continues to refuse to play and is stubborn about this matter, then it is certain that they would lose revenue in the millions. Usually, a no-show causes a big impact financially on the ICC coffers. Also, it would affect JioStar, which is the Indian media rights holder that has been trying its best to reconsider the deal agreement for USD 3 billion (INR 300 Crore) with the world association.

Loss in Advertisement Revenue

The host broadcaster might lose revenue from advertising, which would be in the amount of INR 200 crore to INR 250 crore. Even a 10-second slot for a commercial AD would potentially cost up to INR 40 lakh for this big game.

On the other hand, if Pakistan’s absence leads to a walkover, then India would be granted full points. But it has severe aftereffects, as the ICC owns the right to slap a fine as a penalty on the PCB.

USD 250 Million! Says Former ICC and PCB Communications Head

There is a clear statement from Sami-ul-Hasan Burney, the communication head of the ICC and PCB, who has summarised the monetary scale staked on just this one match.

“With reference to the penalties or the losses, I have said this before: a single match costs a whopping sum of USD 250 million. However, it accounts for everything and not just the broadcaster’s loss, whereas the annual revenue of Pakistan is USD 36 million, and it makes a huge variation,” Sami-ul-Hasan Burney reported to the new media.

Industry insiders with knowledge of private negotiations on the expenses associated with the game with a billion-plus viewers were cited by the Sydney Morning Herald.

It said that the estimated value of each match between India and Pakistan is about USD 250 million.

ICC’s Views on the Pakistan Government’s Announcement

The way the ICC expressed its views after the Pakistan government’s announcement highlighted how crucial and valuable the competition is. And, also, the Pakistan government had highlighted the indisputable value of the contest through their announcement.

The ICC claims that “this position of selective participation is difficult to reconcile with the fundamental premise of a global sporting event where all qualified teams are expected to compete on equal terms per the event schedule.”

“Selective participation compromises the spirit and sanctity of ICC tournaments, which are based on sporting integrity, competitiveness, consistency, and fairness.” Pakistan departed for Colombo to play its remaining games in the competition on February 7, 2026, due to the drama.

It would be difficult for the Pakistan board to argue against the limited pullout, seeing that the ICC, PCB, and BCCI have agreed to a hybrid model for the India-Pakistan games through 2027.

Advertisers’ Point of View

Multiple advertisers from various categories have stated that the uncertainty that a single match introduces into the package as a whole is the greater problem.

Until the ICC’s position is clear, many brands have stated that they are not going to commit to anything. Especially the India–Pakistan matches are the centrepiece for which the commercial value is great in the World Cup events.

He added that even when India plays against other teams, those games do not have the same level of excitement and importance. Additionally, matches that do not involve India cannot match the unique audience reach that the India-Pakistan game achieves in a single broadcast.

“Most of India’s games against its opponents are not on the expected scale or timing. Moreover, the non-India will not be equal to the reach of what IND vs PAK has got, and that’s completely crazy, which delivers a huge profit in a single match,” the executive said.

Conclusion

The India-Pakistan match is more than just a cricket event that gets high ratings; it significantly boosts the Gross Rating Points (GRP), which helps improve the overall average for the entire tournament deal.

Because Pakistan has decided to boycott India’s matches, many brands have said they won’t make any commitments until the ICC’s stance is clear. In particular, the India-Pakistan matches are the focal point of the World Cup events with significant commercial value.
