Hardik Pandya Returns to India A Squad for Australia A Series

Home » Hardik Pandya Returns to India A Squad for Australia A Series

Hardik Pandya is finally back in the India A setup, but his comeback still comes with one important condition.

The all-rounder has been picked for the three-match one-day series against Australia A in Puducherry, with the BCCI making it clear that his participation will depend on fitness clearance. The squad was announced by the Indian board on September 9, bringing Pandya back into competitive cricket plans after a frustrating spell on the sidelines.

Pandya has not played competitive cricket for around five months. His return will now be closely watched, not because his ability is in doubt, but because India needs to know whether his body can handle the demands of a full game again.

Pandya’s Comeback Has One Big Hurdle

The 32-year-old has had a difficult few months with injuries. During IPL 2026, Pandya missed four matches because of back spasms. He was later ruled out of India’s home series against Afghanistan after suffering a quadriceps strain. Just when he appeared close to returning, another leg injury kept him out of the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan.

His selection for India A is therefore more than just another squad announcement. The matches will give the selectors a chance to see how he handles batting, bowling and the physical workload of competitive cricket.

Pandya’s fitness clearance from the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru remains the first step. If he gets the green light, the Australia A series could become his first competitive appearance in months.

Gaikwad to Lead India A in One-Day Series

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named captain of the India A one-day team, with Devdutt Padikkal appointed his deputy.

The squad has a strong mix of established domestic performers and young players looking to push their case for higher honours. Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar, Priyansh Arya, Nishant Sindhu, Vipraj Nigam, Arshin Kulkarni, Arshad Khan and Naman Dhir are among those selected.

Kumar Kushagra and Prabhsimran Singh are the wicketkeeping options, while Gurjapneet Singh and Yash Thakur are part of the bowling group. Pandya’s inclusion gives the side an experienced all-rounder who can change the balance of the playing XI if he is cleared to play.

Australia A Series Begins in September

India A and Australia A will play two multi-day matches before the one-day leg of the tour. The first multi-day game is scheduled from September 22 to 25, followed by the second from September 29 to October 2. The three one-day matches will then be played on October 6, 9 and 11.

All five matches will take place in Puducherry. For Pandya, the timing could be useful. Instead of being thrown straight into international cricket after a long injury layoff, he can return through India A and build his workload gradually.

Padikkal Gets Red-Ball Leadership Role

Devdutt Padikkal will also have leadership duties in the multi-day leg, where he has been named captain. Sai Sudharsan will serve as his deputy.

The red-ball squad includes Aman Mokhade, Ayush Pandey, Yash Rathod and Shaik Rasheed. Kumar Kushagra and N Jagadeesan are the wicketkeepers, while Shams Mulani, Tanush Kotian, Tushar Deshpande, Anshul Kamboj, Praful Hinge, Nachiket Bhute and V Vyshak make up the bowling and all-round options.

Sudharsan and Padikkal are part of both squads, while Gaikwad has been selected only for the one-day series.

What India Will Look for From Pandya

For Pandya, the numbers may not be the biggest talking point when he returns.

India will want to see whether he can complete a match without any fitness concerns and handle the workload expected from an all-rounder. His ability to bowl regularly is particularly important because his value to the Indian team comes from what he offers with both bat and ball.

The Australia A games can provide a much clearer picture than a fitness test alone. Three competitive matches could show whether his body is ready for the intensity of top-level cricket.

There is also no guarantee that Pandya will play simply because his name is in the squad. The fitness clearance remains mandatory.

A Crucial Step Before His India Return

Pandya’s selection will naturally raise questions about when he could return to the senior Indian team. But for now, the focus is much simpler. He first needs to get fit, play cricket, and prove that he can stay on the field.

If everything goes according to plan, the Australia A one-day series could give Pandya the competitive cricket he needs before another India comeback becomes a realistic possibility.

After months of injury setbacks, the road back has finally begun. The next test is whether his body is ready for it.
