Can Pakistan Bounce Back at Lord’s? Usman Backs Pakistan to Respond

Pakistan’s first Test against England at Headingley ended in a heavy defeat, but spinner Ali Usman believes his team must not lose confidence. After producing a career-best effort with the ball, Usman urged Pakistan’s batters to stay positive, build partnerships and take the game one session at a time.

His message came at a difficult point for Pakistan. England had taken control of the Test after bowling Pakistan out for just 171 before making 409 in their first innings. That gave the hosts a massive 238-run lead.

Pakistan eventually suffered an innings and 103-run defeat on Friday, with England taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Usman Produces a Special Five-Wicket Haul

Amid Pakistan’s problems, Usman was one of the few bright spots. The left-arm spinner finished with 5-95, claiming his maiden five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

The performance also put his name into the record books. Usman became the first visiting spinner since Australia’s Ashley Mallett in 1972 to take five wickets in a Test innings at Headingley. It ended a 54-year wait for another overseas spinner to achieve the feat at the famous Leeds ground.

Usman removed several important England batters during his spell. Jordan Cox fell for 73, while Harry Brook was dismissed for 91 after looking set for another big score at his home ground. Dan Lawrence, Gus Atkinson and Ollie Robinson were the other wickets in Usman’s five-wicket haul.

He felt Pakistan’s bowling attack had given England too many chances and too many runs. England’s batters made the most of those opportunities, with Joe Root scoring 66, Cox making 73, Lawrence hitting 51 and Brook adding 91.

Usman Sees More Help for Spin

According to the spinner, the pitch was already becoming slower and could offer more turn in the following days. He believed that could give Pakistan’s spinners a bigger role if the team managed to stay in the contest.

The problem, however, was that England had already built a huge advantage. After Pakistan’s 171, England reached 409 before being bowled out on the third morning. Even Usman’s five wickets could not prevent the hosts from taking a 238-run lead.

Pakistan Urged to Focus on Each Session

Usman’s advice to the batting group was simple: stay positive and try to bat for as long as possible.

Rather than looking at England’s lead and becoming frustrated, he wanted Pakistan to concentrate on partnerships and individual sessions. The visitors had shown good batting form during their recent matches in the West Indies and in their warm-up games, and Usman felt that confidence should not disappear because of one difficult outing.

That approach was important for Pakistan, particularly after their first-innings collapse. England’s seamers Josh Tongue and Ollie Robinson had taken three wickets each as Pakistan were dismissed for 171.

However, Pakistan could not produce the response Usman had hoped for. Their second innings lasted only 135 runs, with England’s pace attack again taking control. Tongue and Robinson finished with eight wickets each across the match as England completed a convincing victory before tea on the third day.

Pakistan Need a Quick Response at Lord’s

The defeat leaves Pakistan 1-0 down, but the series is far from over. The second Test will begin at Lord’s on August 27, giving the visitors a short window to assess what went wrong and make changes.

Usman’s five-wicket haul showed that Pakistan can find positives even when the overall performance falls short. The bigger challenge now is to turn those individual moments into a stronger team display.

For Pakistan, the message remains clear: forget the size of England’s victory, learn from the mistakes and start again. The next Test will demand better batting, tighter bowling and, above all, the positive approach Usman called for at Headingley.

Final Thoughts

For Pakistan, the Headingley defeat was a reminder of how quickly a Test can slip away when both batting and bowling fail to deliver together. Yet Ali Usman’s performance gives the team something to build on. His five-wicket haul showed that Pakistan can still find ways to make an impact, even when the conditions are difficult.

The bigger task now is to avoid carrying the disappointment of Headingley into the next Test. England have taken the early advantage, but the series is not finished. Pakistan need better discipline with the ball and far more patience with the bat. Usman’s call to focus on one session at a time could be important at Lord’s. If Pakistan can hold their nerve, build partnerships and make England work for every wicket, they have a chance to make the second Test a much closer contest.
