Home » Bengaluru RCB Parade Tragedy: What Happened, Arrests, Official Response

On June 4, 2025, a great number of people lost their lives due to a stampede that happened during the celebrations outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, following RCB’s IPL victory. A day meant to make fans of RCB very happy ended in misery, with 11 fans losing their lives and over 75 injured.

People are now questioning how the event and its attendees were managed and who bears the responsibility for such events.

How the Tragedy Unfolded

Massive Crowds and Confusion

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s first IPL victory captured the attention of thousands, with the stadium receiving more than two lakh fans, going way past the 35,000-person limit.

Many became confused as there were different statements that caused disagreements. Police had said that there wouldn’t be a parade, but the RCB team confirmed it later, which attracted more fans.

The expectation that free passes were given or that people could queue first led to problems at the gates with big crowds and confusion.

Lack of Crowd Control and Overwhelmed Security

  1. Even though the police announced entry only for ticket holders, the huge crowd of fans without tickets near the stadium threatened safety.
  2. With things getting out of hand, fans pushed each other and tried to climb over the security fence. Because it was only big enough for two travelers, the eastern gate became a crowded barrier for many who tried to enter at the same time.
  3. Assistance did not reach the victims as there were too many people and blocked ways in the area.

Sequence of Events

  1. The incident happened at Gate 2, a short time after some RCB players met the Karnataka Chief Minister at the Vidhana Soudha.
  2. Eyewitnesses say that there were chaotic moments in which some people were stepped on as they passed out, when panic took over.
  3. Footwear was left all over, barricades had been smashed, and players’ jerseys were torn after the confusion.

Who Got Arrested and Why

Arrests Made by Bengaluru Police

  1. Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head for RCB at Diageo India, was arrested at Bengaluru airport while attempting to travel to Mumbai.
  2. Three people from DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt. Ltd., such as Sunil Mathew, Sumanth, and Kiran Kumar, were detained by authorities.
  3. At the chief minister’s direction, security forces arrested several officials from the team and the organizer for their inability to provide answers to his questions.

Charges and Investigations

  1. The Bengaluru police FIR stated that they had denied permission for the event at the stadium due to crowd management concerns, but RCB, DNA Entertainment, and KSCA went ahead regardless.
  2. The state government suspended several top police officials, including the Bengaluru Police Commissioner, and appointed a new commissioner, Seemanth Kumar Singh.
  3. A one-man judicial commission, led by retired Karnataka High Court judge Justice Michael D’Cunha, was established to investigate the tragedy within 30 days.

What Officials, Police, and Authorities Said

Government and Police Statements

  1. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called the incident “absolutely heartrending,” announced ₹10 lakh compensation for each deceased’s family, and ordered a magisterial inquiry.
  2. The authorities kept on banning the event and trying to explain the risks, but the organizers chose to ignore their warnings.
  3. According to the FIR, the police claimed that the organizers still hosted the event even when they were told to postpone or cancel it for safety reasons.

RCB and KSCA Response

  1. In a statement, RCB and KSCA mentioned their sincere concern and gave heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families while promising to give them ₹5 lakh each.
  2. They stated, “We are profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of life and the injuries sustained by individuals during this event. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by this incident. We sincerely regret this tragedy and stand in solidarity with the bereaved families during this extremely difficult time”.

Criticism and Political Fallout

  1. The Congress government faced criticism for allegedly prioritizing publicity over public safety and for ignoring police warnings.
  2. According to Bhaskar Rao, who used to head the Bengaluru Police Department, the way the government acted was the worst event in the history of Karnataka Police and merely an attempt to shift the blame to the police.

Conclusion

The way the organization did management, broadcast its messages, and cared for people at the Bengaluru RCB parade was faulty. Too many people, trouble getting in, being warned by police, and a lack of crowd guidance made everything led to the tragic stampede. Acts such as arresting leaders of the RCB and event management, and suspensions of officials, reveal that the matter was treated with utmost seriousness and that justice was needed quickly. The incident serves as a warning that preparing and managing big public events carefully, explaining plans, and always staying safe are very important. Because 11 lives were lost and over 30 people were injured, proper changes need to be put in place so something similar never takes place in Bengaluru or any city in India again
