Recently, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) officially announced their decision to scrap the Impact Player rule for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy in 2024.
With the Impact Player rule, a 12th player could be introduced at any point during a match. This allows the teams to replace a player (batsman or bowler) from the initial playing XI announced during the toss.
The Impact Player Rule was implemented, it started drawing so much to add strategic depth to the sport, but later it started drawing a lot of criticism and controversy that the BCCI has scrapped it.
It is important to note that, despite being scrapped from the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, the Impact Player Rule will continue to be implemented in popular tournaments like the IPL (Indian Premier League). Hence, this indicates that BCCI is still trying to figure out different sports formats.
Interestingly, the impact player rule was under experimentation process in the SMAT 2022-23 season and was later introduced in the IPL, to provide additional opportunities to the Indian players.
The much anticipated Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy is scheduled to take place from 23rd November to 15th December 2024.
Cricketers who have opposed the Impact Player Rule
There are a few well-known cricketers who have publicly expressed their opposition against the Impact Player rule by explaining their concerns regarding its negative implications in cricket and player career progression.
1. Rohit Sharma
The 37-year-old Indian captain has publicly expressed his frustration regarding the Impact player rule, stating that it interferes with the professional career progression and growth of Indian all-rounders. Rohit Sharma believes it could be a barrier to player’s development who are expected to play different roles in the team.
2. Virat Kohli
After the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli has also addressed similar concerns, reasoning that the Impact player rule interferes with sport’s balance and negatively impacts the player’s role in the team.
3. Axar Patel
The Indian 30-year-old Indian all-rounder cricketer Axar Patel has also come up with his views against the Impact Player Rule, explaining how it is affecting his batting position and overall strategy of the game. Also, Axar feels that the Impact Player rule disturbs the natural flow of the sport.
4. Mukesh Kumar
Joining the list of opposing to Impact player rule, Mukesh Kumar, the fast bowler, has also expressed the drawbacks and lent his support publicly for this rule’s abolition. Mukesh believes that the Impact Player rule can drastically influence the player’s performance, and it is the biggest barrier to opportunities.
However, the above-mentioned four cricketers are not the only ones to oppose, there are other players too. But these four players have been constantly lending their voice against the Impact Player rule in public such that it has become a noticeable issue.
Saurashtra Team Head Coach about Impact Player Rule scrapped for Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024
Niraj Odedra, the head coach of the Saurashtra Cricket team, has recently expressed his support concerning the BCCI’s initiative to scrap the Impact Player rule for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2024.
In addition, Niraj referred to this implementation as a “refreshing change,” and highlighted the importance of this decision as it works more effectively with traditional cricket formats.
Most importantly, Niraj Odedra pointed out BCCI’s major change saying that the ICC (International Cricket Council) hasn’t implemented this rule in major tournaments. Hence, Niraj feels that if the Impact player rule is removed, it can greatly improve the value, fair play, and overall competitiveness of the sport at the domestic level.
Future of Impact Player Rule
Although the concept of impact players has been eradicated at domestic-level tournaments such as the SMAT, the BCCI ultimately chose to go ahead with the rule till the IPL cycle 2025-2027. The retention of this rule ensures that the teams can make use of the additional abilities of the 12th player on the field as well as adding excitement for broadcasters and spectators.
Also, this rule has been used in popular franchise leagues such as International League T20 (ILT20) and Abu Dhabi T10.
However, the concept of impact players wouldn’t be implemented or encouraged by ICC in the future for high-profile tournaments.
Mainly, the previous two seasons of the IPL witnessed the teams more and more opting for full-time batters and bowlers in the playing XI, thereby questioning the growth of the all-rounders trapped with fewer opportunities. For example, talented players such as Shivam Dube, Tilak Varma, Abhishek Sharma, and Riyan Parag were utilized for their batting abilities and weren’t allowed to bowl or field much in the IPL 2023 and 2024 editions. With a record of several 250-plus scores accumulated in this year’s IPL 2024, several cricketers and experts have questioned if the impact player rule is spoiling the essence of the T20 contest making it completely a one-sided batsman’s game. Finally, it remains to be observed if the trend continues even after the IPL 2025 season, despite the mixed opinions continuing to exist
