Bangladesh’s Asia Cup Semi-Final Hopes Take a Hit After Sri Lanka Loss

Bangladesh’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the Women’s Asia Cup 2026 suffered a setback on Sunday as Sri Lanka held their nerve to win a tense Group B contest by four wickets at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The result sent Sri Lanka through to the semi-finals, while Bangladesh must now beat the United Arab Emirates in their final group match on September 8 to keep their campaign alive. The top two teams from each group advance to the last four.

For much of the match, Bangladesh looked capable of pulling off an upset. They posted only 114 for eight, but their bowlers turned the chase into a serious test before Harshitha Samarawickrama calmly took Sri Lanka over the line.

Bangladesh Struggle to Build a Big Total

Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field, and Bangladesh made a steady start through Juairiya Ferdous and Dilara Akter. Juairiya made 14 from 10 balls before Sugandika Kumari ended the opening partnership.

Dilara continued to attack and made 26 from 26 balls, but Bangladesh could not turn their start into a substantial total. The biggest contribution came from Sobhana Mostary, who scored 34 from 41 balls. She tried to hold the innings together as Sri Lanka’s bowlers kept things tight in the middle overs.

The standout performer with the ball was 17-year-old left-arm spinner Chamudi Praboda. She produced the best figures of her career, taking three wickets for 21 runs. Her spell prevented Bangladesh from finding the boundaries they needed in the second half of the innings.

Nigar Sultana Joty was dismissed for four, while Shorna Akter made nine. Bangladesh eventually finished on 114 for eight from their 20 overs. On a Dubai surface were

stroke-making was not always easy, the total gave Bangladesh something to defend, but Sri Lanka remained favourites because of their experience and depth.

Marufa Akter Turns the Match Around

Sri Lanka’s chase appeared to be heading towards a comfortable finish early on, but Bangladesh’s fast bowler Marufa Akter quickly changed the picture.

Marufa removed Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu for just one and then struck again to leave the defending champions under pressure. Other Bangladesh bowlers joined in, and Sri Lanka suddenly found themselves in serious trouble.

At 44 for five in the 10th over, Sri Lanka were wobbling badly. Sultana Khatun and Ritu Moni also picked up wickets, while Fahima Khatun produced an important piece of fielding when her direct hit ran out Kavisha Dilhari. The collapse gave Bangladesh a real chance of defending their modest total.

Marufa finished with three wickets for 21 runs, matching Praboda’s figures and keeping Bangladesh in the contest deep into the second innings. But Sri Lanka had one batter who refused to panic.

Harshitha Samarawickrama Keeps Sri Lanka Alive

With wickets falling around her, Harshitha Samarawickrama played exactly the innings Sri Lanka needed. Rather than taking unnecessary risks, she absorbed the pressure and waited for scoring opportunities. As the required runs came down, she gradually increased the tempo and put Bangladesh’s bowlers under pressure.

Harshitha remained unbeaten on 48 from 37 balls. Her knock became the difference between a Sri Lankan collapse and a place in the semi-finals. She received useful support from the lower order, and Sri Lanka eventually reached 115 for six in 19.2 overs, winning with four balls still unused. Harshitha was named Player of the Match for her match-winning effort.

The victory also showed why Sri Lanka remain one of the strongest sides in the tournament. They were pushed hard by Bangladesh but found a way out of trouble when the match seemed to be slipping away.

Bangladesh Now Face a Must-Win Match

The defeat leaves Bangladesh with plenty to play for. Their final Group B match against hosts UAE on September 8 has now become crucial.

Bangladesh began the tournament with a convincing 71-run victory over Indonesia, but their batting remained a concern in that game as well. They managed 129 for eight, with Shorna Akter’s unbeaten 31 providing much of the late momentum.

Before the Sri Lanka match, Bangladesh knew that a win would put them firmly on course for the semi-finals. That opportunity has now gone.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have confirmed their place in the last four and remain unbeaten in the tournament. India are also through to the semi-finals, with the remaining qualification places still to be decided. The semi-finals are scheduled for September 10 and 11, with the final set for September 13.

For Bangladesh, the equation is now simple: beat UAE and keep their semi-final dream alive.
